Hawaii Island

1-9 WAIMEA OCEAN FILM FESTIVAL
Mauna Kea Resort + Fairmont Orchid (Jan. 1-4) and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai (Jan. 5-9), times vary
This annual festival brings more than 60 films to Hawai‘i Island. The events also feature filmmaker Q&As, as well as various presentations and panel discussions that center around the ocean.

Kauai

25-27: KAUA‘I VOICES SINGS BROADWAY, BABY!
St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e, times vary
Listen to your favorite Broadway tunes while the island’s popular 50-member auditioned choral ensemble presents songs from musicals, including A Chorus Line, Cabaret and Avenue Q.

Maui

20: MAUI OCEANFRONT MARATHON
Wailea through Kihei to Lahaina, 5:30 a.m. to noon
Lace up your sneakers for this 26.2-mile run that follows the scene south coast of Maui to the historic fishing town of Lahaina. It’s also the perfect time of year to keep your eyes peeled for whales while you cruise along the shoreline. The event also includes a half marathon, 15K, 10K and 5K.

Oahu

1: HATSUMODE 2019
Hawai‘i Kotohira Jinsha – Hawai‘i Dazaifu Tenmangu on Olomea St., midnight to 4 p.m.
Celebrate the New Year with the Japanese community at a Shinto shrine. Partake in cultural events and get your head “bitten” by a Japanese lion for good luck. Listen to taiko drums and also enjoy ozoni mochi soup.

7-13: SONY OPEN IN HAWAI‘I
Wai‘alae Country Club, times vary
O‘ahu is home to the annual Sony Open, the largest charity golf event in the state. Everyone is invited to watch the pros play and compete for a good cause.

10-27: AVENUE Q
Manoa Valley Theatre, times vary
Watch this fun, comedic musical that is performed with puppets and follows the life of a collage grad who attempts to find a job, love and a purpose in life on New York City’s Avenue Q.
